Water polo is played in a pool 1.8 metres deep, 30 metres long and trăng tròn metres wide, with a goal 3 metres high and at least 0.9 metre above the water. The goal is marked by vertical posts, a crossbar and a net.

There are seven players per team, six swimmers and a goalie. The trang chính team wears white caps, the visiting team blue ones and the goalies wear red caps with the number 1 in white.

Like football, the game begins with the ball in the centre of the pool and both teams sprint for it from their own goal lines. Các cầu thủ hậu vệ ko được phép tắc ngăn ngừa đối phương dịch chuyển trừ Lúc cầu thủ tê liệt đang được lưu giữ bóng. Những lỗi nguy hiểm có khả năng sẽ bị một trái ngược trừng trị trong khoảng một phút trong khoảng cấm địa và cầu thủ nào là phạm 5 lỗi có khả năng sẽ bị truất quyền tranh tài.

Trận đấu được chia thành 4 hiệp, từng hiệp kể từ 5 cho tới 8 phút. Sau tỉ số hòa, đem nhì hiệp phụ, từng hiệp kéo dãn dài 3 phút. Nếu trận đấu vẫn hòa sau nhì hiệp phụ, nhì team tiếp tục nối tiếp nghịch tặc thêm thắt 3 phút nữa cho tới Lúc đem đưa ra quyết định của trọng tài.
